A Hiker’s Perspective

The way we percieve thnigs dramatically influences our experience of the world.

A short story . . .

One of my favorite hikes includes a very steep climb of about 900 vertical feet. There is nothing technical about the climb, but it is a narrow trail with a lot of scrambles and dramatic looking drop-offs.

I usually go down the same trail that I went up. However, even though the same trails the experience is very different. Walking in a different direction on the same trial makes it seem entirely new. Going down the path rather than up stressed different muscles and joints. Going down rather than us required different skills. I moved at a different pace. I became more (or less) anxious in different spots.

The views, when going down, seemed new and fresh even though I had been at the same spot just hours before. I realized that even if we may be in the same spot as we were yesterday, our approach to the day can make it new an fresh.

The lesson from a hiker’s perspective is that we need to pay attention to how we are in a particular place and not simply where we are.

Here are some ideas for four top destinations in the White Mountains.
